Ground Zero Mosque, Politicians, and Other Enemies of God’s People

If you know any card games you understand the trump card… God trumps politicians, Muslims, and any other power that comes against us and avows enmity to Him or His people!  I’m not talking about religion, which is invented by man.  I’m talking about God as revealed to us in Jesus and in the Word of God, both written and living, will overcome any human power. In Romans 9:17 Paul quotes Exodus as God says to Pharaoh, “FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH.” God will have His way. He will set His people free. He destroyed the Egyptian army; 200,000 armed men in one watery swoop, the greatest power of its day floating belly up in the Red Sea. And He’ll do it again when it’s His time.

But before I go on, I want to be clear, my God, the one revealed in Jesus, His incarnation, is a God of love.  1 John tells us that He IS love.  So whatever you or I might think, however, this story plays out, it can only reveal a loving God.

Was Jesus concerned with the Romans when they represented pure evil?  Judging by the New Testament evidence He was not.  Yet the Romans are barely a distant memory. Yet the smiting of the Egyptians and many other enemies of God’s people, the ending of the Roman empire, all these things are a part of our testimony.  The memory of what God has done.  Whenever Israel forgot to give testimony to what God had done for them, the country floundered, suffered and all but vanished.

But God has different purposes than we do.  An eternal purpose.  His perspective is different from a human perspective.  And He calls us to adopt His perspective.  To have “Kingdom eyes”.  But we must become pliable in His hand, in the hands of the Holy Spirit who makes new creations of us. The Church must become Love and Power by His Spirit! We are not made for demonstrations, but for demonstrating the Kingdom – 1 Corinthians 2:4.  That means power to heal the sick, set the captives free, and share the good news.  God made us for loving as we have experienced His love and sharing what we’ve received from Him.   This is the meaning of making disciples of all nations.
